USS Cleveland CL-55 Reunion Association

Shipmates John Ellis and Sal Calandra

Hello,

I am the daughter of JP Ellis (Jack), who served on the USS CLEVELAND during WWII. My Dad passed away in December of 1980, but I am trying to put together some of his military records for myself & my husband. I do have a journal that was kept by my grandfather on my father's battles & places traveled. I have been looking at the website for the Cleveland, and would love to have some more pictures of my father while on board the ship. I did actually find a picture of my Dad on the website within the Cruise Book photos. He is pictured with the Fourth Division, in the seventh row, 2nd from the left.

Also any of Sal Calandra, who also served on the Cleveland. He was an "uncle" to all my family over the years till his passing about 18 years ago now.

My Dad was just shy of 15 1/2 years old when he arrived in Casa Blanca on Nov. 8, 1942. I would guess he was probably one of the youngest aboard at that time. He had told us children that after Pearl Harbor, he went and joined the next day. I am not positive it was the very next day, but was shortly thereafter at the very least.

I am going to try and put together a better record of my Dad's service to this great country we live in, as well as re-creating his awards & ribbons for myself. I will put these along side my husbands awards & ribbons in our military display. My husband has been serving this country since 1975 and is still.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this email to other members of the Cleveland, as maybe they would have more pictures, stories or thoughts of their time in knowing my Dad.

Sincerely,

Chris Warner
